Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Pantry Ingredients. You only need a handful of simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand in your cupboard/fridge.
- Quick & Easy. You can make this recipe in less than 20 minutes, with my easy step by step photos and instructions below.
- Kid Friendly. If you’re craving something sweet or looking for a quick breakfast to make for the kids, this will surely be a winner. Kids love handheld foods so they will definitely enjoy dipping these into some maple syrup.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Bread – I recommend using your favourite sliced white or whole grain bread. I used a Texas thick cut white bread (the thicker the cut the more sturdy your French toast will be).
- Non Dairy Milk – I like using oat milk because it’s the closest in flavour to regular cows milk. You can substitute any kind of plant milk.
- Granulated Sugar – This is added to the batter for sweetness. You can substitute your favourite sweetener.
- Cornstarch – Thickens the batter and helps get a crispy outside.
- Flaxseeds – Make sure to use ground flaxseeds, this will replace the egg in the batter.
- Ground Cinnamon – A must for that warm cinnamon flavour. If your out of cinnamon try adding different spices like pumpkin spice, cardamom, nutmeg, or vanilla extract,
- Vanilla – I like using pure vanilla extract for add a depth of flavour.
- Vegan Butter – To pan fry the French toast sticks. I prefer vegan butter for its flavour.
Step By Step Instructions
*Video tutorial is down below in the recipe card*

- Toss the warm french toast sticks in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
- Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup, fresh berries or your favourite toppings.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Recipe Tips & Notes
- Toasted or stale bread works best. Fresh bread tends to be more delicate to work with and makes for soggy sticks.
- Don’t soak the bread for too long, a couple seconds on each side is good enough.
- Make sure your pan is pre heated over medium-medium high heat, you want the pan to be hot when you add the French toast sticks. This will help cook the batter immediately, creating a crispy exterior.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan, make sure you leave a bit of space between each stick to ensure they cook and brown evenly.
How To Serve
I love to serve these stacked like a Jenga tower, topped with fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup. This is the perfect breakfast for when you want something quick but fancy.
I also enjoy these eaten plain or grab a small bowl with maple syrup for dipping (kids love this). To make this a complete breakfast you can serve these with a side of scrambled tofu or vegan sausage or bacon.
How To Store, Reheat, & Freeze
To Store, add any leftovers to an air tight container or ziplock bag and place in the fridge for 3 days. Keep in mind these are best eaten fresh since they will lose their crispiness.
To Reheat, I recommend baking them at 350F for a couple minutes to crisp up and then toss with cinnamon sugar as needed.
To Freeze, place onto a baking sheet in single layer and freeze until firm. Then transfer to a ziplock bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat from frozen in the oven and then toss with cinnamon sugar as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
This recipe uses a batter made of non dairy milk, cornstarch, and ground flaxseeds which creates the perfect egg replacement for French toast. The non dairy milk adds a creamy flavour while the cornstarch and ground flaxseeds help thicken the mixture.
Use stale or toasted bread is best. I prefer to use either white Texas toast or your favourite thick sliced bread. Whole grain would work as well. Thicker sliced bread works best for French toast sticks, since they won’t fall apart as easy.
Yes you can, the amount of batter will vary depending on how thick your bread slices are. The thicker your bread slices are the less batter you will have.
