Alternative Ways To Crush Sesame Seeds
If you don’t have a sesame grinder, here are 3 other ways to crush sesame seeds. You could use a mortar and pestle, a spice grinder, or try this handy trick using the plastic bag method below:
- Put sesame seeds in a resealable plastic bag and seal it.
- Lay the bag flat on a stable surface.
- Crush the seeds inside the bag using a rolling pin or heavy object until they smell fragrant. Now it’s ready to use.
Now, you might be wondering if crushing sesame seeds is necessary. I say yes! Crushing sesame seeds unlocks their nutty flavour and adds texture to your sushi, so don’t skip this step! 😉
🔪 How To Cut Avocado For Sushi?
Are you tired of avocado mishaps? Learn my simple, no-fuss cutting method that I rely on daily! 🥑
Start by slicing it lengthwise, rotating around the seed. Next, rotate the avocado 90 degrees and do the same thing. Check out my recipe video below to see this tutorial in action.
Now that the avocado has been cut into four sections twist them in opposite directions to separate them. Remove the seed and carefully peel the skin from each quarter before slicing.
How To Make It
1. Begin by making a batch of seasoned sushi rice. Let it cool to room temperature before starting the avocado sushi rolls.
2. Cover the bamboo mat with plastic wrap to make cleanup easier and prevent rice from sticking. Using scissors, cut a full-size nori sheet in half to create two half sheets.
3. Place half a nori sheet horizontally on the bamboo mat, rough side up. Wet your hands to prevent the rice from sticking. Spread 1/2 – 3/4 cup sushi rice thinly over the nori, leaving 1/2 inch bare at the top.
4. Flip the nori sheet over so the rice faces down and the bare top part is now at the bottom. Add the avocado slices in the centre.
5. To roll the sushi:
- Lift the edge of the nori closest to you and tuck the bare flap of the nori inside the roll.
- Roll until you’ve completed the roll.
- Using the mat, give a firm hug/squeeze the roll with both hands. Repeat to shape the roll further.
6. Sprinkle with crushed sesame seeds then slice the roll into six pieces with a wet knife in one swift motion. (Before each cut, dip the blade in water to keep it wet, and wipe it clean after each slice).
👩🏻🍳 Jazz’s Tips
- Use ripe avocados. For the best buttery flavour. They should yield to gentle pressure when squeezed. Unripe ones taste bland and have a firm, undesirable texture.
- To avoid rice sticking to your hands. Wet fingers by dipping them in a small bowl of water before handling sushi rice.
- Evenly distribute rice. Spread the rice evenly across the entire nori sheet so your sushi roll has a uniform appearance.
- Evenly cut sushi. Using a ruler can help cut the rolls into consistent sizes for serving.
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy your avocado sushi rolls with soy sauce for dipping or a dollop of vegan spicy mayo. And don’t forget the classic sushi sides, wasabi and pickled ginger – for that restaurant sushi experience!
To eat sushi with wasabi, mix a small amount of wasabi into your soy sauce dish or apply a dab of wasabi directly onto the sushi before dipping it into soy sauce. Adjust the amount of wasabi to suit your preference for spiciness.
Variations
If you’re eager to play around with this avocado roll recipe. Check out my favourite combinations below:
A.A.C. Roll – A delicious filling of avocado, asparagus, and cucumber. I like to blanch the asparagus for the best flavour.
Avocado Shiitake Roll – Add my marinaded, simmered shiitake mushrooms for added umami flavour.
Avocado Sweet Potato Roll – Features a fun hack incorporating baked frozen sweet potato fries, creating a satisfying roll that perfectly complements the creamy avocado.
Mango Avocado Roll – Buttery avocado paired with fresh, sweet mango for a tropical spin.
Avocado and Tofu Roll – Try avocado paired with teriyaki tofu strips like in this Tofu Crunch Roll.
How To Store
Enjoy avocado rolls immediately, as the avocado will brown upon exposure to air but brown avocado is still safe to eat. If you have any leftovers, wrap them well in plastic wrap or put them in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
When your avocado is ripe, it should yield slightly when gently squeezed without feeling too soft. Additionally, look for darkened skin and a slight softness near the stem.
To prevent avocados from browning in sushi, especially when making these rolls ahead of time, lightly brush them with lemon or vinegar before rolling. Use ripe avocados, but not overly soft ones, as overripe ones will brown faster.
Yes, avocado rolls are gluten-free. However avoid dipping them in traditional soy sauce which contains wheat. Instead, use tamari or gluten-free soy sauce. The main ingredients such as avocado, rice, and nori (seaweed) are naturally gluten-free.
